Why this matters now

The global health crisis facing gay and bisexual men is growing — and most physicians never see the full picture.

HIV is only the beginning. Stigma cascades into missed care across every specialty — depression, substance use, cardiovascular disease, and cancers that go unscreened because patients don’t trust, or can’t safely access, the healthcare system.

1 in 4
New HIV infections worldwide

Gay and bisexual men represent nearly 1 in 4 new HIV infections globally.

69
Countries criminalize same-sex relations

In many, simply seeking healthcare can mean exposure, arrest, or violence.

97%
Ugandan LGBTQ+ health orgs defunded

In 2025, nearly all organizations doing HIV prevention with LGBTQ+ communities lost USAID funding; most have closed operations.

37%
Experienced provider discrimination

Of gay, lesbian, and bisexual patients — within the past year alone.

1 in 5
Delayed or avoided care

LGBTQ+ Americans who put off medical care due to past discrimination.

57%
Can't meet basic financial needs

Of gay and bisexual men in global surveys — a social determinant that compounds every health disparity.

Health and human rights are inseparable.

Criminalization emboldens structural violence. Provider discrimination drives patients underground. You cannot treat the patient in front of you if the society around them is designed to harm them.

What physicians can do: council members gain visibility into conditions most clinicians never encounter — and contribute to changing them. Your travel notes can become a briefing. Your clinical questions can inform research priorities. Your voice carries weight in rooms where health policy is made.
